Is it necessary?
The second gate, and the question of whether this needs to exist at all.
By the end of this lesson
- Ask whether something true also needs saying
- Notice when the real motive is participation rather than contribution

Something can be completely true—and still not need to be said.
The second gate asks a harder question: Is it necessary? What useful purpose does sharing this actually serve?
AI has nearly eliminated the cost of creating words, images, opinions, responses, and reactions. But when creation becomes infinite—attention becomes precious.
Before sharing, ask: Does someone need this information? Will it clarify something important? Will silence create harm? Am I contributing something useful—or merely adding another reaction?
Ask one more question: Am I sharing this to serve the situation—or because I want the emotional satisfaction of responding?
Before your next consequential post, message, or reply—wait. If the purpose is still clear after the emotion fades, proceed. If not, perhaps the message has already served its purpose by remaining unsent.
Not every truth needs a microphone. Pass the second gate.
Wisdom includes knowing when not to amplify.
The lesson
This gate catches things the first one lets through, because true and necessary are genuinely different properties. A great deal of accurate commentary did not need to exist, and the accuracy is not a defence.
The useful question is what changes if you say nothing. If the answer is that the point still gets made by others, the information is already available, and nothing is decided differently, then what is being added is volume. That is worth knowing before you spend the effort.
There is a specific case worth naming: contributing to a conversation because it is happening and you have a view, rather than because you have something the conversation lacks. This is now very cheap to do and it feels like engagement. The gate asks you to tell the two apart.
The cost is real even when the content is fine. Attention is finite, and every additional piece competes with the things people actually need to see — including, often, your own more important work.

Gate 2 of 4
Is it necessary?
All four have to clear before anything is sent, published, or amplified.

For the same piece of work, write one sentence on what would be lost if you did not publish it.
Done when — Your sentence names something specific, or you have decided not to send it.
